Home Saddle service Fitting harness

A good harness starts with the horse

The horse's build, movement, harness, and driving style all play a role in the choice and adjustment of your tack. Just as with a saddle, it is therefore not just about the right size. The complete picture determines whether the tack fits comfortably and functions optimally.

At Tweespan, you can therefore Have Zilco harness fitted by people with extensive practical experience with horses, tack, and the driving sport..

This can be done at your location or free of charge at our store in Boornbergum.

Fit is also the determining factor for a harness.

A size chart can tell you whether to look towards a cob, full, or another size. However, that still doesn't tell you whether the harness actually fits well.

No two horses are the same. The shape of the withers, shoulders, back, and movement differ from horse to horse. The harness and the amount of work demanded of the horse also play a role.

Therefore, during a measurement, we look at, among other things:

  • the size and position of the breastpiece;
  • the fit and freedom around the withers;
  • the freedom of movement of the horse;
  • the adjustment of the bridle;
  • the connection of the harness to your carriage;
  • the way you use the harness.

So we don't just check if the harness is the right size, but if it actually fits.

We look, feel, try on, and assess. And we explain to you what we base our choices on. So you don't need to know exactly which size or version you need in advance.

For the demanding driver

To us, being demanding does not mean that you have to be a professional with horses.

It means that you want to take good care of your horse and do not settle for something that fits roughly.

You want a harness that:

  • is comfortable for your horse;
  • is functional in use;
  • offers sufficient freedom of movement;
  • fits your harness;
  • enables you to perform optimally.

Whether you drive recreationally, compete regularly, or train your horse at a high level: a good fit remains important.

Being demanding starts with the desire to do what is right for your horse.

Zilco harnesses

For this service, we measure Zilco harnesses .

Zilco is an originally Australian brand that has been producing synthetic harnesses since 1962. The harnesses are lightweight, low-maintenance, and available in various sizes and designs.

We do not determine which size and design are suitable based solely on a size chart. We look at your horse, the harness, and the way you use the tack.

Our knowledge does not stop at the saddle

At Fryso, we have been looking at the relationship between for years. horse, movement and equipment.

That began over 25 years ago with the development of the Fryso saddle. Dissatisfied with the fit of existing saddles for the Friesian horse, Elzelien Renssen and Sybren Minkema developed their own saddle. Fryso saddles are now used worldwide.

That same way of looking is also important for a harness.

A horse must be able to move freely, and the equipment must support that movement rather than restrict it. Therefore, we look not only at a product, but at the horse wearing it and the way it is used.

On-site measurements

Would you like to have the harness fitted to your own horse? Then Sybren will come to your location.

The advantage of this is that we can view the situation as you actually use it. We see your horse, the harness, and your carriage together. Moreover, your horse is often most relaxed in his familiar surroundings, allowing us to assess the fit as accurately as possible.

If the situation permits, a demonstration ride is also possible. This allows us to see how the harness behaves when the horse is actually in motion.

For on-site measurements, Sybren Minkema with you and your horse.

Sybren has been involved with horses, and Friesian horses in particular, for decades. He is active in both dressage and harness racing and is a familiar face within the world of the Friesian horse. At Fryso, too, he has been one of the saddle fitting specialists for many years.

That experience is not merely theoretical. Sybren trains and drives horses himself and knows from practical experience what happens when a horse is working. This is particularly important with tack: a harness may seem to fit well at a standstill, but much changes during movement.

Would you rather go to the store?

You are very welcome at Tweespan in Boornbergum.

Marrit can calmly fit the harness to your horse there. There is ample space next to the shop to try it on. Furthermore, if you can bring the carriage, there is the option to drive up on the public road in front of the shop.

This way, we can assess the harness not only at a standstill but, where possible, also while driving.

Trying on at the store is free.

Marrit de Vries takes care of the measurements at the shop. Marrit also brings her knowledge directly from the field. She is active in dressage with both Friesian and KWPN horses and is also involved in breeding. She is also active in dressage driving with Friesian horses.

That combination of sport and breeding gives her a broad perspective on horses: from the conformation and development of a young horse to training and competing horses at a high level.

This is also reflected in her own sporting results, where she competes at the highest level in carriage dressage.

Why get fitted?

A well-fitting harness gives you certainty regarding the foundation of your harness. You do not have to try out different sizes and designs yourself. We help you make a targeted choice and explain why that choice suits your horse. Furthermore, it is possible to combine sizes, and we adjust the harness optimally.

The goal is simple: a harness that does its job well and a horse that can move comfortably and freely.
